The kitchen is the heart of the home – especially when the house is a mere 980 square feet. Clever choices allow the owners of this renovated northwest Wisconsin retreat to use every inch to its smartest.

1. The white pine timber frame does more than support the structure and add classic cottage charm, it’s a convenient spot to hang cast iron pans and stash other kitchen utensils. Open shelving and a wall-mounted pegboard display the rest.

2. The cabin, a treasured family getaway since the 1990s, is occupied only for a week at a time, so full-size appliances were unnecessary. Instead, owner Doug Beilfuss (who worked alongside his parents to build the home and ultimately founded his own timber frame company) opted for a 2-foot-wide GE refrigerator and a 24-inch Bertazzoni range.

3. Rich, dark stain on the hardwood floors and countertops allows the pale blond shade of the maple cabinets and pine posts, beams and rafters to stand out.

4. Strategically placed awning windows, track task lighting and Scandinavian-inspired pendants wash the kitchen in warm, functional light.
