Tucked into the lush valleys and Rocky Mountain range of central Montana, you’ll find this sprawling, ranch-style abode. Or then again, maybe you won’t.

Intentionally designed to blend seamlessly with its natural surroundings, the home that was designed by Natural Element Homes of Sweetwater, Tennessee, is a nod to the old houses that once graced the prairies of the West. “The homeowners wanted to create a home that would fit nicely with the Montana ranch lifestyle,” says Robert Lambert, owner of Natural Element Homes. “They wanted it to feel like an authentic old house, yet possess modern conveniences and comfort.”

To achieve that lived-in feel, the homeowners and their design team opted for hybrid construction, complete with antique log faces and dovetail corners with chinking; reclaimed barn wood; rusty corrugated metal; and lots of local stone. Reclaimed materials also were used inside for the ceilings and ceiling beams, flooring, interior doors, interior trim, shelving and many of the furnishings. “Most everything on the exterior is reclaimed,” says Lambert. “Only the windows, roof and stone are new.”

The finished house features nearly 7,000 square feet of living space (including outdoor areas), five bedrooms and can comfortably sleep eighteen people. It also includes a home theater, gym and poker room. Dubbed the Lucky Man Ranch, it’s meant to inspire all who visit so that they leave refreshed, relaxed and, says Lambert, “in a much better state of mind than when they arrived.”

What Makes It The Best

The all-natural exterior offers a mix of materials — a look that’s on trend and perfect for blending in with the rustic surroundings. Reclaimed items, such as barn wood flooring and timbers from an old sawmill, give the home the time-worn look the owners were trying to achieve. The ranch-style design keeps the plan feeling open and casual. A wall of windows along the back of the home ushers in loads of natural light.
