Redefining Rustic in an Idaho Timber Home

Take rough-hewn timbers, rugged stone and a backcountry setting, then add a dash of modern styling. That's the recipe for this cabin built at Tamarack Resort in Donnelly, Idaho.

A vaulted ceiling lined with timber beams perfectly complements the elaborate four-post bed, reclaimed armoire and chalet-style windows in the master bedroom.[/caption] Created by the award-winning team of PrecisionCraft Log and Timber Homes and its sister company, Mountain Architects, the retreat, named the Eagle’s Nest, is both beautiful and livable. The Eagle’s Nest boasts a unique design, driven by its unusual site. "The sloping lot nestled against the mountainside at Tamarack Resort demanded a design that was long and narrow," says designer Matt Franklin, who works at Mountain Architects.

"Though the design is intricate, with various angles and bump outs, there are few steps in the roofline and limited level changes, making the home work beautifully with its surroundings." The home’s living spaces, as well as three of the cabin's four bedrooms, command picture-perfect views. The cabin's more utilitarian spaces are tucked in back.

Family-style dining is simple with the Eagle's Nest dining room. The long teak table offers bench seating and two grand chairs.

The intricate design of the Eagle's Nest makes the home a true dream cabin showcase. With an open layout, private sleeping quarters, a bunk room, outdoor living areas and a master suite with a built-in outdoor hot tub, the Eagle's Nest packs plenty of features into its relatively small size.

On a snowy winter's night, a blazing fire warms the cabin's outdoor area. The double-sided fireplace serves both the great room inside and this sheltered outdoor space.

Much of the cabin's distinctive flair comes from its artfully designed timber-frame trusses and adz-cut, square log walls. This mix of construction elements--both logs and timber-framed trusses--makes the cabin a hybrid. PrecisionCraft's hybrid homes can also combine timber framing with round log construction, or heavy wood accents with conventional stud-frame construction.

Throughout the Eagle's Nest cabin, elegant modern finishes contrast with the rustic, textured logs and timbers. The kitchen comes to life with its custom, knotty alder cabinets. Distressed and glazed, the Euro-style cabinets magnify the warm hue of the timbers and complement the cooler feel of the granite countertops and travertine backsplash.

The great room presents an awe-inspiring display of log and timber. The log walls and elaborate trusses form an inviting backdrop to the home's open design, which encourages family and friends to interact.

The cabin’s flooring materials blend old and new, too. The kitchen, dining room and great room’s wood flooring was sawn from timbers salvaged when an old bridge in UT was dismantled. In the cabin’s entry, mud room and powder room, heated slate tile flooring is accented with custom tile "rug" designs.

The two-sided, wood-burning fireplace adds to the cabin appeal. Enjoyed from the great room or the covered outdoor living area, the fireplace commands attention with its natural stone quarried in Montana. The hearth’s rough stone is the perfect backdrop for the great room’s warm and sumptuous seating.
