Once a humble utilitarian space sequestered to the rear of the house (or even the basement), today’s kitchen is now a home’s centerpiece exposed for all to see. Like no other room in a house, the kitchen takes on the personality of its owner, and this one is no exception. In our Kitchen of the Month, Tom and Mary Reamer used the Arts & Crafts movement (think Greene & Greene and Gustav Stickley) as their guide but allowed themselves the freedom to interpret it in their own way. The result is creative and exceptional.

From the cherry-red, terra cotta-orange and avocado-green backsplash to the cut-tile mosaic and rainbow-hued dishware, this kitchen is filled with bold strokes of color.

Staying true to the home’s timber roots, the ceiling sports heavy oak beams that mirror the timber frame. Five-inch window casings made from white pine add to the Craftsman feel.

The maple and cherry-wood cabinetry speaks to the home’s Arts & Crafts influence. The upper cabinets are fronted in leaded-glass panels.

For casual dining, the granite-topped island seats three in comfort. The base is designed to mimic a piece of Stickley-inspired fine furniture.

Open shelving in the cabinetry uppers and at the base of the island provide the family with a variety of options to keep the kitchen organized.
