Photos Of A French-Country Timber Home In Colorado

"Photos Of A French-Country Timber Home In Colorado"

August 2008 | Timber Home Living
by: Matt Herrick | photos: James Ray Spahn | styling: Colleen Macomber

French-country timber home exterior
The rear windows of the Danners' home face south for maximum exposure. Stonemason Simon Alpin built double retaining walls to bolster the home's position. To the left, the retaining wall hides a staircase leading from the back yard up to the patio door at the dining room.

Before it sees the light of day, Bensonwood's Douglass fir framing is finished at the company's factory in New Hampshire with a penetrating clear oil finish under a topcoat. The soft colors of the gas and wood-burning Telluride gold stone fireplace mingle well with the fir beams, alder-trimmed windows and cherry spline.

French-country timber home kitchen
"We eat most of our meals here," Mike says. Marilyn says the kitchen is a work of art. "That's not a table you see. That was built by a cabinet maker. The whole kitchen was built by a cabinet maker." The cabinet maker is Kyle Chadwick, owner of The Woodsmith in Dolores, Colorado. The wood is alder. The granite table top was faux painted by area artist Lucy Boody. The stove and ovens are by Viking.

French-country timber home dining room
"When we were designing the dining room," Marilyn says, "function was the first thing we discussed. The dining room table is not just for eating, it is for the kids to do projects, puzzles, and homework." Marilyn purchased the teak dining table pine chairs at a furniture import store in South Central Los Angeles. She stained the chairs to match the table. The buffet is an antique piece from England. The French door, back right, opens out to the patio. Filled with Loewen alder wood windows and doors, this back part of the home is exposed to the south and receives tremendous sun.

French-country timber home bedroom
A set of French doors open into one of the upstairs guest bedrooms, with the queen bed slotted into the space under a dormer. Over the window, a natural grass widow shade from Castec Window Shading. Lying in bed, guests can see through the French doors and out the dining room’s picture window.

French-country timber home bathroom
The master bath is composed of travertine floor and wall tiles, Italian marble-top double sinks, and separated between his—glass shower stall with a stone bench—and hers—soaking tub. All faucets and waters systems in the home are from Grohe.

The Danners began working with Bensonwood to design their home in 2002, construction began and ended in 2003, and interior decorator Marilyn Siegel added finishes and furniture until the Danners finally moved in for good in August 2005. Telluride ski resort, the white cap, is visible in the background of this shot, as is a two-car garage connected to the home by a mud room / sewing room. The garage is sided with reclaimed barn board, same as the home.

French-country timber home office tower
Here you get a sense of the joinery details, as the craft of connecting and securing the separate members of the timber frame to one another is apparent in Mike's office tower. The corner post area illustrates well the beam, mortise and tenon connections. The top of the credenza was made by Ranta Construction, while the other pieces (teak) were bought new separately at Down Home Furnishings. The pieces were assembled to make the credenza.

French-country timber home master suite
The soft simplicity in this corner of the master bedroom whispers French country living. The exposed ceiling and fir posts, beams and tenon connections bring a rustic charm to the room, while the soft colors of the bedding and faux-stucco finish add warmth. The bedding (quilt and pillow shams) is Cloud Nine. "The dresser is an antique from Belgium. I fell in love with the color," Marilyn says. The armoire is a French antique dating to 1870.

French-country timber home custom wood door
Stunning custom sidelights sandwich the welcoming front door to this home. The timber-framed porch and stone exterior gives off a timeworn vibe.
