What is a Party Barn?

A detour from the more traditional barn silhouettes found across the American Midwest, this 2,800-square-foot party barn mimics the style of low, rambling horse stables — a look that blends in perfectly with its upstate New York location.

“The barn is located on Canandaigua Lake in the Finger Lakes Region,” says Eric Fraser of New Energy Works. “It’s a beautiful spot for hosting large gatherings, specifically the homeowners’ daughter’s wedding, which was the impetus for getting the party barn built in the first place.”

The homeowners worked with an independent architect to create the design for the barn, carefully incorporating two separate living spaces — one that’s more traditional with a kitchen and sitting area, and a large, open room with a bar to use for parties and celebrations. When they’re not entertaining, the second space can be closed off and used more like a garage for storage.

The barn’s structural timber frame features 34-foot trusses, creating high ceilings and room for a second-story loft that also houses a bunk spaces for overnight guests. New Energy Works provided the Douglas Fir frame for the home, as well as the enclosure.

“Creating a place for family is always special,” says Eric, “and I love how this barn combines traditional components with custom finishes and careful detailing.”
